Let’s Talk Buckthorn

Volunteers from Bassett Creek, Cedar Lake, Eloise Butler and the North Loop riverfront gathered to discuss techniques and show off some of their work. Volunteers first gathered near the Maple Bowl just outside Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden to hear 20-year+ veteran volunteer Jim Proctor share about his years of clearing buckthorn from the bowl and the perimeter of the garden. Best techniques and tools were discussed as we toured the area. We then gathered at a second location in nearby Bassett Creek Woods with Anna Peterson and Ryan Atwell who led us through examples of their removal and replanting work. Topics included how to deal with difficult buckthorn regrowth after a delay of initial work. It was great to see the camaraderie and sharing of ideas between all those in attendance.
